Meet Pat, she needs your help!! This beautiful dog is a gentle, sweet 5 month old lab cross. She arrived at the Shelter on October 10, 2017 after being found abandoned by her owners. Pat was born with a anatomic ureters that requires corrective surgery. The following is an explanation of Pat’s condition.

The urinary tract of dogs is exactly like ours. It begins with the kidneys which act as filtration system, continuously transforming toxins into urine. A tiny tube, called the ureter, transports urine from each kidney to the bladder. Urine is then stored in the bladder, normally at which point it is voluntarily emptied through a tube called the urethra.

With ectopic ureters, one or both of the ureters do not connect normally to the bladder. Instead, they bypass the bladder and go into the urethra, or in females, the vagina or the uterus. Since these organs are not equipped for urine storage, like the bladder, leakage is the results, and the puppy is incontinent. In addition to her condition, one of Pat’s kidneys has atrophied and may require removal. In spite of her poor condition, provided she gets the right surgery, her prognosis is excellent.

She will be attending the University of Minneapolis Veterinary clinic where they are skilled in this specialized surgery. The costs for Pat’s surgery could be as much as $4,000.00!! Please help and donate towards Pat’s life saving surgery. We will keep you updated of her surgery date (tentatively end of March) and her ongoing condition. To donate for Pat’s surgery contact us at 204-832-9880 or send in a cheque to Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter, 3062 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3K 0Y1.
